things to see: Vancouver, exhibitions

I’m super excited to be doing my first exhibition roundup in Canada! The art scene isn’t quite as prolific, or should I say overwhelming here as in London, but London is a bit of a beast – and often there’s so much to choose from that you always end up missing things. In Vancouver, however, you get the feeling that something exciting is happening as the art scene is still growing. You have to rummage around a bit more to find something juicy, but trust me there is some really interesting stuff out there if you’re willing to take the time to look!

Also, let’s not forget the proximity of Vancouver to Seattle – where there has been a huge Yayoi Kusama exhibition on at the Seattle Art Museum (ending this weekend, alas I did not make it along….) A mere 4 hour drive gives you access to another bustling art scene to compliment the one here in Vancouver. I’m looking forward to eventually exploiting that proximity for a long weekend at some point in the near future!

SeptThings to See

This month you also have the opportunity to see a couple of projected public art pieces, including Uninterrupted – a ‘cinematic spectacle’ with an original soundtrack which is projected onto the underbelly of the Cambie Bridge and is view-able from Coopers’ Park – which is on until September 24th. There’s also the week long Facade Fest, organised in part by the guys at Burrard Arts Foundation with visual art being projected with accompanying soundtracks onto the Vancouver Art Gallery every night this week from 7:30pm-midnight. Uninterrupted was awesome, and I can’t wait to get myself down to see some of the projections that make up Facade Fest!

As a final note, I also want to highlight SWARM – 2 nights of events to highlight the beginning of Vancouver’s artist run centres’ programming season. There are a tonne of private views; performances; screenings; and special events going on, with most of them taking place on Friday 8th September (aka, today)
